The questions an online store gets every day
Ask any store owner what lands in their inbox and the list is short and repetitive. The answers are almost always somewhere on the website already; the shopper just did not find them, or did not want to search at 11 p.m. on a phone.
- Specifications and sizes: "Is this jacket true to size?", "What are the dimensions of the 3-seater?", "Is the mug dishwasher safe?"
- Compatibility: "Will this charger work with my model?", "Which chain fits my bar?", "Does this refill fit the older version?"
- Delivery: "Do you ship to Norway?", "How long does shipping to Canada take?", "How much is express?"
- Returns and exchanges: "Can I return it if I've opened it?", "Who pays for return shipping?"
- Stock and choice: "Is the blue one in stock?", "What's the difference between these two?", "What do you recommend for a beginner?"
Each of these costs a shopper's patience if it goes unanswered, and costs you a few minutes if it reaches you. An assistant that answers them correctly from your own catalogue is useful. One that answers them confidently but wrongly is worse than none — a wrong size or a made-up delivery date becomes a return or a complaint.
A real example from a real shop
Our live demo runs on UNISO, a shop selling saw chains — a catalogue where the right answer depends on three numbers stamped on the customer's bar. This exchange is copied from the assistant on that shop:
My bar is stamped 3/8 LP .050 56 DL. Which chain do I order?
You should order the UNISO 16-inch Semi-Chisel Saw Chain, which replaces Oregon S56 (91PX056G). It matches your bar specifications with a 3/8" LP pitch, .050" gauge, and 56 drive links. It is available in a 1-pack for $29.99 CAD, a 2-pack for $45.99 CAD, or a 3-pack for $55.99 CAD.
Any discount code?
I do not have information about any discount codes. You can reach out directly to the UNISO team at [email protected], and they will be able to help you.
Two things matter here. The first answer matched pitch, gauge and drive links to a product and quoted its own prices. The second answer did not invent a promotion to please the shopper: the shop's pages say nothing about discount codes, so the assistant said so and gave the shop's own address. You can ask the demo shop your own questions.
It shows products, not just text
A store assistant should help people choose, not only answer. The chat button is a small mascot — a puppy by default, a mole in its burrow, or a plain icon if you prefer. On product-heavy sites it holds up a product bubble to visitors who have not asked anything yet, a quiet way to show what you sell.
On a website that is not on Shopify, the assistant recognises your product pages from the product information most store platforms already put in them (structured product data or og:type product tags). On Shopify it reads the catalogue directly and can show product cards with picture and price in the chat, plus an add-to-cart button the shopper presses themselves.
Shopify and other store platforms: what differs
The assistant answers product and policy questions on any platform. What it can do depends on how it is connected:
| Shopify (our app) | Other stores (one line of code) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it reads your store | Products, stock, policies and pages, through Shopify, every 30 minutes | Your public pages, read once a day |
| Product and policy answers | Yes | Yes |
| Product cards and add-to-cart button | Yes | Product bubble from the mascot; no add-to-cart |
| Order status | Yes, with order number and matching e-mail | No |
| Cancel an unshipped order or change its address | Yes, if you switch it on | No |
| Hand-off to e-mail, Slack, Discord, Telegram | Yes | Yes |
So on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Squarespace Commerce, Wix Stores or a custom shop, the assistant is a well-informed product and policy expert, and anything about a specific order goes to you. See the step-by-step pages for WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Shopify.
What happens when it doesn't know
Every store has gaps: a country the shipping page forgets, a product without dimensions, a question about pickup. When your information does not cover a question, the assistant tells the shopper it does not know and offers to pass it on. The conversation reaches you by e-mail, Slack, Discord or Telegram; from the chat apps you can reply and the shopper sees your answer in their chat window.
The unanswered question also goes on a list in your dashboard. Add the missing fact to your product page or policy, and the assistant uses it after the next read. Over a few weeks that list is the cheapest way to make your store clearer for everyone, not only for chat users.
Common answers get cheaper over time
Store questions repeat. The assistant keeps a library of standard answers learned from questions it answered well, each tied to the parts of your store it came from. When one of those parts changes — a new price, a new return window — the entry stops being used until you approve or rewrite it. You can review, edit or reject any entry.
Pricing for a store
One conversation is one shopper chatting, however many questions they ask. The free plan has 30 conversations a month. Paid plans are $19 for 90, $59 for 275, $199 for 1,000 and $1,099 for 6,000 conversations a month, with no per-answer fees and no overage charges. See pricing.
Questions store owners ask
Will it recommend products I don't sell?
No. It answers only from your own catalogue and pages. If you don't sell something, it says so rather than suggesting another brand.
Can it answer in my shoppers' languages?
Yes. It replies in the language the shopper writes in, from the same store information, so a French question about your English shipping policy gets a French answer.
My store isn't on Shopify. Can shoppers check their orders?
Not through the assistant. On websites outside Shopify it answers product and policy questions; order questions are passed to you. Order status, cancellation and address changes need our Shopify app.
How quickly does it pick up a new product or price?
A Shopify store is read again every 30 minutes; any other website once a day.
Is the Shopify app available now?
The App Store listing is coming soon. Write to [email protected] for the install link. You can try it on our Shopify demo store.
